What Is A Slider Window?

Windows are an important part of your house; they increase the value of your home. Over the years, many new and unique styles of windows including energy efficient windows have been introduced to the market.

If you have not yet changed your home’s windows in the last 10 years then it is time that you invest in new energy-efficient windows. When you shop for replacement windows, you will run into a lot of options including casement, double-hung, and sliders.

What is a slider window, you ask?

In this blog post, we will talk about slider windows as well as their pros and cons. Once you’re informed, you will be able to make the best decision for your window replacement project.

What Is A Slider Window?

You may have not yet heard about slider windows as it’s a fairly new name, but in reality, the concept is not a new one.

A slider window is a type of window that you can open horizontally. Mainly slider windows have two glass panels with one moveable side. It is up to you to decide which side you want the moveable pane to be on.

Slider windows come with single pane and double pane window glass. It’s best that you invest your money in double pane slider windows as they are great for insulation and are more energy-efficient.

Types Of Slider Windows

Slider windows come available in three different types; these include single slider, double slider, and three-pane slider. Single sliders have one moveable and one fixed pane, and the movable pane slides back and forth on the sash.

Double sliders have two or three panes of glass, but two panes can move and one pane is fixed. You can open two panes of the window for more ventilation.

Lastly, the three-pane sliders usually feature a large picture window in the center and a sliding window on either side.

Pros Of Slider Windows

Here are some key advantages of slider windows.

  • The best part of slider windows is that they provide an exceptional view of the outdoors. As they have minimal framing, there is not much that will block your view. They are also wider than other windows so, they have the dimensions of a perfect picture window.
  • They come in bigger sizes than the double-hung windows as they move right to left instead of up and down. So you can install a larger slider window than a double-hung window.
  • They provide great ventilation as they can be opened wider. This means that you will be able to let in a lot of fresh air and natural sunlight in your house.
  • Slider windows are very affordable as compared to double-hung windows. Since they have a relatively simple construction they are an affordable choice for replacement. Just like sliding glass doors, slider windows simply glide along a track to open and close whereas double-hung windows use a complex pulley system which makes their construction expensive.
  • Since they are easy to open and close, they are easy to use for all age groups. So, if you’re getting older then they are a great choice for you.
  • Slider windows are the best option for places that are difficult to reach like stairwells and tight hallways, as you will just need to be able to reach the bottom of the window to open it.

Cons Of Slider Windows

Here are a few disadvantages of slider windows.

  • Debris and dirt can easily get caught in the slider tracks which can make it difficult to open the window. So, to keep them in good shape you will need to clean and lubricate the tracks of your slider windows.
  • Water can pool in the windows sill which can lead to problems with the track. So, make sure that you choose slider windows that have drainage holes to prevent this problem.
