Tilt and Turn VS. Slider Windows

Request A Free Estimate

    What are slider windows?

Slider windows are in use all around Canada. Slider windows slide horizontally in a track on the top and bottom. They usually meet in the middle and seal around all sides. They often have a locking point in the middle and on the sides.

A double hung window is a slider window that moves vertically. Newer versions of these can be tilted into the house to make cleaning easier.

What are the disadvantages of slider windows?

    • Decreased insulation and seal breakdown: These types of windows often have seals that deteriorate over time. The meeting in the middle and all around the edges can be a weak point where cold and drafts can seep in. There is often ice build up around the mid point. If your house shifts at all, which can happen a lot in a new build, these windows will no longer meet their seals effectively and they can be difficult to adjust. Due to their construction, it is also very difficult to replace the seals, maintain them or clean them. The windows are always in the way of any kind of work that needs to be done on a slider window.
    • Moisture build up: Slider windows have a track at the bottom of the frame. If moisture gets into the track and freezes during the winter; it will be very difficult to get the window open. This can easily occur with simple condensation dripping down into the track or frost build up/melt cycle adding to the moisture. In addition, moisture left in these tracks can cause mold/mildew to occur if left uncleaned.
    • Cleaning: Cleaning can be difficult with these windows. Especially the ones that do not tilt in. You will have to go to the outside of your house to clean the exterior side. In addition, if any debris gets into the tracks, it will cause issues for sliding them smoothly and also prevent proper closing. The tracks need to be cleaned consistently and sometimes oiled and vacuumed.
    • Heaviness: If installing a triple pane slider window this will definitely increase their weight. When thinking of a double hung window that moves up and down, this will make it far more difficult to lift, open and tilt out to clean.
    • Weak Locking Points: Even though the locking points on these windows has improved over the years, their locking system is still weak in comparison to other styles of windows.

How are European Tilt and Turn windows in comparison?

A European style tilt and turn window is one that opens with a single handle. The handle is locked in the down position. The window opens like a door to the inside of the house when the handle is moved to the horizontal position. The window can then be tilted inwards when the handle is moved to the up position. These windows open and close silently on large, solid metal hinges on the side. The weight of the window is never a factor as the hinges hold the weight and allow the window to open with little effort. Tilt and Turn windows are the new style that offer clean and sophisticated lines.

    • Increased insulation and seal maintenance: There is no meeting in the middle of a tilt and turn window. The seal is individual to each window; all the way around. When the handle is placed in the locking position, the locks draw the window up against the frame which then applies even pressure around the entire window creating a complete seal. Seals can easily be removed and replaced. Maintenance of the seals is easy and quickly completed due to the way the windows open.
    • Moisture build up: Tilt and turn windows seal up against the frame. This seal will prevent water from going down into the frame. On the inside of the house, the window pane is on the outside of the main frame and any condensation or moisture can be easily wiped clean off the surface. It will not drip into any part of the main frame and cause freezing.
    • Cleaning: Cleaning tilt and turn windows could not be easier, especially for our Edmonton weather. Because of their design they open into the house. Any dirt build up on the window can easily be wiped off the surface. The frame of the window can also be easily cleaned as the window completely moves out of the way. The seals can be inspected and quickly wiped to remove any dust build up. You will not need to use ladders on the outside of your house to access the exterior glass. Simply open the window to the inside of your house and wipe them clean, standing in the room.
    • Heaviness: If installing a triple pane window this will affect their weight in use. All of the weight of the tilt and turn window is held by the impressive and durable metal hinges on the sides of the windows. You will not feel the heaviness of the panes in your hands. This enables you to ensure your house is protected from the weather with full triple glazing.
    • Locking Points: There are multiple locking points on the tilt and turn window. When the handle is placed in the down position and the window is closed, this automatically engages the locks. No further steps needed. All of the hinges, fixtures and locks are concealed within the frame. They are not visible or open to tampering on the outside of the window at any point.
