5 effective ways of preventing window condensation

Condensation happens when warm air encounters colder air or surface. That’s why you’ll often see it on your windows during winters when the temperature on the outside is significantly lower than it is inside of your house. It’s caused by moisture in the air, which turns into droplets of water on the surface of your windows. You can see the same process happening when you’re drinking something cold on a hot day.

Ways of preventing condensation

If too much humidity builds up in your house, it can lead not only to condensation but, over a longer period of time, even to mold and damp appearing on your walls. That’s why you should take care of this issue during its early stages when you still have a chance of avoiding more serious consequences. The point is that if there’s a problem with the level of moisture in your property, window condensation will be one of the first signs, so you shouldn’t ignore it.

Use bathroom and kitchen fans

Every time you take a shower or cook something in the kitchen, there’s a lot of steam. And if there’s no way for it to leave the room, it’ll increase the humidity in the entire house. For this reason, extractor fans and vents are commonly installed in bathrooms and kitchens. Make sure to turn the fans on whenever you’re using certain appliances that can add to the problem. This way, you’ll be able to prevent problems with moisture.

Get a dehumidifier

This option is a bit more costly but very effective. If you decide to buy such a device, you’ll be able to reduce the level of humidity. However, this is not a permanent solution as the problems with fog gathering on your windows will be back once you turn the dehumidifier off.

Let the air flow

It’s the warm, moist air gathered inside of your house that’s the cause of condensation. And ensuring the right ventilation will help you avoid such problems. You have to enable the movement of air. If you don’t have a ventilation system installed, then make sure to open windows as often as possible.

Control the temperature

If you want to avoid condensation, the most obvious solution is to make your windows warmer. To achieve this effect, you can simply increase the temperature of your whole house. If you monitor the humidity levels, you’ll be able to make the necessary adjustments easily whenever necessary.

Replace your windows

The most efficient way to end your problems, especially if you’re dealing with condensation forming between the panes, is to replace the windows that are problematic. If you notice that the moisture is inside of your window, not simply on the glass surface, it’s a clear sign that the seal is broken. Look for more efficient and airtight solutions that will solve the issue.
